Reissue with the latest remastering. Features original cover artwork. Comes with a descripton in Japanese. A tribute to the great European guitarist Rene Thomas – and one that features Thomas himself fronting a sweet small combo with Fender Rhodes from Rob Franken – with a sound thats unlike any other album that Rene ever recorded! Thomas first rose to fame on the bop scene in Paris in the postwar years – but here, hes got a much more longform approach to guitar – really stretching out on these very long tracks that build beautifully with his own richly chromatic lines, and some great solo moments from Franken. The group also features Koos Serierse on bass and Louis Debij on drums – and titles include My Wife Maria, Jesus Think Of Me, Star Eyes, and Round Midnight. Rene Thomas was the best guitar player after Django in Europe, but like the Gipsy master, he died too young in 1975. He was a bebop player who could really cut loose! He played with the greatest musicians of his time (Stan Getz, Chet Baker, Sonny Rollins, etc.). If he had lived in the US, he would be known as one of the top bebop players like Jimmy Raney and Tal Farlow. He had perfect technique and sound, and a lot of punch! His style is quite like Jimmy Raneys, but perhaps a bit more sensual. In this recording he plays with excellent Dutch musicians, and each number is long enough to let you enjoy the progess of his solo. His Paris recordings are all good too. I also love the one he did in NY.
