Tracks list

The accent is on the fiery tones of electric and Spanish guitars, as Les Baxter
blends them with voices and percussion instruments in a spectacular array of
exciting rhythms and exotic sounds.
To carry out the striking theme of this album. Les calls upon the soaring tones
of four electrically amplified guitars in some arrangements, while other
selections feature three Spanish guitars and several unusual stringed
instruments.
To these exciting sounds, hes added the rich vocal blend of male voices singing
in Spanish, plus a mixed chorus of voices that sing without words, phrasing
their tones in a style similar to that of an instrumental section. These
combinations of guitars and voices carry the melodic line of each tune, leaving
a galaxy of percussion instruments free to add vibrant touches of rhythmic
excitement.
The selections arc as varied in mood as they arc in origin. Two tunes.
Piccdissima Sere паю, and Tell Me. Margarita, arc newly arrived
visitors from Mexico. Both have been highly successful ihcrc. «hough they
originally came from Europe. Three other tunes. Sabre Dance. Ritual Fire Dance,
and My Baddy, are known to nearly everyone, but these stylings arc completely
fresh. Though both impassioned dances retain their usual pounding tempos, four
amplified guitars give them a distinctive new dress. My Baddy debuts here as a
samba, w ith three Spanish guitars and percussion joining forces in a version
that pulses with new color and rhythm.
Mandolino, Cabana Mulatto, and Cabayo arc all Les Baxter originals each sparked
by the Latin influence, sparkling with the unmistakable Baxter touch. The Latin
mood carries throughout the remainder of the tunes as well, with a variety of
Spanish and Brazilian tempos setting refreshing rhythm changes from one to
another. They all feature the three classical guitarists. Nestor Amaral. Joe
Carioca. and Pcpe Gamboa - with Gamboa sometimes playing ires (a Cuban
three-stringed instrument). or cavaquinha (a Brazilian instrument similar to a
guitar).
